JAC: I considered it before I started T because I want to me a parent - in the end I reverted back to my plan from when I was 7 years old to adopt because 1) there are so many kids in the world who need homes and love (this was via my 7 year old self who was apparently super savvy) 2) it is very expensive: in addition to the procedures, you have to pay to store the eggs, which is several hundred dollars a month – If you don’t want to keep the eggs for yourself, this is obviously not an issue. 3) Possibly most relevant to you: donating eggs is REALLY hard on your body. To donate eggs you have to go on estrogen, then have them removed (which is said it be painful/uncomfortable). At the time I was thinking of this I was going to be on T in the next year (similar to your position now) so my body would have had to go through getting mass estrogen then turn around and start T – something that would have been really hard physically – this probably reflects my position as a (dis)abled person and for someone else maybe it wouldn’t be AS hard physically, still it would be hard. And I would expect it to be hard emotionally too – and I worried estrogen therapy might cause body image problems for me. BUT that was me, and so I decided not to do it. For someone else, the sacrifices could be well worth it, and if you put enough time between doing it and starting T, your body could adjust. A good doctor who knows about hormones and transfolk would be ideal to have too here. And there may not be a rush, depending on your plans; your eggs don’t disappear when you go on T, so if you can’t decide now they will still be there. In the end, only you know what is right for you.
Gabriel: If you want to donate eggs or are doing it to earn some extra money and you are capable, why not? I even considered doing it for a while. You will have to be aware of the doses of oestrogen you will have to take before you donate, though, so if you’re informed and still want to I don’t think it would be a bad idea.
Riley: I think that it is a good way to earn money. I also know that you can’t mention to them that you’re trans, and on a questionare they give you, do not say you are a “lesbian”, (if you like girls that is). I know some people who have done it to raise money for top surgery. The only thing is, they have to inject you with estrogen boosters if you’re okay with that.
